Growing apprehensions exist over the potential of armed conflict among East African neighbors, Ethiopia and Eritrea, as confrontational language has escalated in the last month.
Ethiopia's, being landlocked, requests for access to the sea coast through Eritrea has sparked a fierce verbal exchange.
The Ethiopian leader first openly declared in 2023 that his government's maritime access was an existential matter, statements that Eritrean authorities dismissed.
Relations between the both governments have frequently been strained. After a prolonged fight for sovereignty, the Eritrean state, which has a extensive maritime frontage, legally broke away from Ethiopian rule in 1993, making it without sea access.
In 1998, a border war broke out in which over a hundred thousand people were killed.
Prime Minister Abiy and army chief General Birhanu Jula have directly stated sovereignty of Eritrea's coastal city of Assab – some 60 km from the border - and suggested the desire to take it by force.
On 1 September, Abiy said Ethiopia's "mistake" of losing entry to the Red Sea as a due to Eritrean independence would be "rectified in the future".
Ethiopia's ambassador to neighboring Kenya, ex-military officer Bacha, said that the port was "Ethiopian property" and would be returned "through military action".
Despite continuous challenges from Ethiopian officials, Asmara's position has been restricted to short statements on social media from Information Minister the minister.
The minister has dismissed Ethiopian requests for maritime entry labeling it "risky" and a "negative policy" of "irredentism" – a strategy of reclaiming previous domains.
Government spokespeople warned on recently that attempts to legitimise "blatant hostility" would have serious consequences for the Ethiopian government and its neighbors and is a "redline that should not be crossed|violated|breached".
Currently, there are little evidence of major military movements in the frontier regions between the neighboring states.
Nonetheless, in Ethiopia, national TV has displayed graduation ceremonies of numerous trainees at various military training camps.
The head of personnel division of the defense force, General Hachalu, stated recently in an interview that the defense forces was in a "reliable position" as "tens of thousands of youths" were enlisting, which he said was "a warning to our enemies".
For decades from 1890, the territory was administered by Italian rulers.
Following the end of Italian rule, it was then managed by the British administration before becoming a associated territory of Ethiopia.
Yet in the early 1960s the ruler terminated this agreement and the region became totally absorbed into the Ethiopian state.
