Everyone is Encouraged to Be the Additional Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile admirers have openly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently feature them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will always be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
